"Project WET’s mission is to advance water education to understand global challenges and inspire local solutions."
Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) is a renowned international program dedicated to interdisciplinary water science and education. It serves a diverse audience, including public and private school teachers, water resource professionals, and youth club leaders. In Illinois, participation in Project WET workshops is completely free, thanks to sponsorship from the Illinois EPA, and includes a complimentary curriculum guide. After completing the initial training, participants can become Project WET Facilitators, enabling them to host their own workshops and spread knowledge throughout their communities.
The curriculum of Project WET is the product of a collaborative effort involving educators, scientists, and resource management professionals. It aligns with state and national educational standards and is deeply integrated with STEM principles. Project WET empowers educators to inspire and facilitate sustainable change, improving water management and conservation at local levels for the benefit of all.
Hosted by NGRREC, the Illinois Project WET Program covers a broad spectrum of topics including surface water, groundwater, and the cultural and historical significance of water, along with contemporary management challenges such as stormwater and nonpoint source pollution.
Project WET is committed to making water education accessible and enjoyable. The program’s activities are designed to enhance existing curricula and engage students through hands-on, interdisciplinary experiences, rather than adding extra burden. Whether you’re teaching in schools or universities, working in preschools, leading Scout or 4-H groups, or representing local resource organizations, Project WET staff are ready to assist in realizing your water education dreams!
